5 ways battery analytics will assist in decarbonising our economy
To meet the commitments of decarbonising our economies in the Paris Agreement, it is projected that we need to install 257 GWh more battery capacity per year until 2050 across industry, transport, and buildings. Batteries can not only supply energy but also store it, and they can respond to the need to do so in milliseconds – making them useful in a range of sectors in an electrified world!
To take advantage of this, there is a need to dramatically increase the overall efficiency of battery production, function, and lifetime. This is where battery analytics comes in…
There are 5 concrete ways in which battery analytics could contribute to an electrified world:
1- Accelerate battery development
The improvement of the overall cycle of the battery from cell to module, to battery pack design and validation, is the first-way battery analytics can play a part in contributing to an electrified world. Software tools (for example, virtual cell models) will allow testing to reduce, speeding up the development cycle.
2- More efficient use of resources
Batteries are currently often operated with significant security buffers, depending on how they are being used. Battery health diagnostics make the current and predicted impact of battery health available. This optimises the operating time and decreases the need for capacity buffers, avoiding CO2 emissions within production and improving the overall use of the batteries.
3- Reduce risk and facilitate trust
Batteries are still a relatively new asset within the car manufacturers, utilities, and financial industries. The complex technical nature of batteries and the lack of historical data increase the risk for all parties involved in using batteries. The ability to have reliable and trustworthy battery analytics data not only makes using batteries more economical and safer but also enables new business models to begin using them.
4- Help owners to resell, reuse and recycle
Battery analytics could help to ensure a fair sale price in the first instance, but also help owners decide whether to resell, reuse, or recycle, eliminating guesswork and replacing it with detailed battery data.
5- Collaborate across industries
Battery analytics can become an important motivator for the fast, economical, and resource-efficient roll-out of batteries. It needs many players to work together across industries and share reliable battery data in order to succeed.
