Part 1 Architectural Assistant jobs – Here’s what to look for in your first role

Your first role as a Part 1 Architectural Assistant is an important step in your career. It’s where you start putting what you’ve learnt at university into practice, gain experience on live projects and discover what interests you most about architecture.

But with so many practices to choose from, how do you know which role is right for you?

Salary is naturally part of the decision, but there are a few other things worth considering when looking at Part 1 Architectural Assistant jobs.

1 – Variety of projects

Working across different sectors and project types can help you discover where your interests lie. Take a look at the practice’s portfolio and find out whether you’ll have the chance to contribute to live projects, develop designs and learn from different briefs.

You might already have a particular sector in mind, but gaining varied experience in your career can help you build a broader skill set.

2- Support and mentoring

Moving from university into practice comes with a learning curve. Having experienced colleagues who are willing to share their knowledge, provide feedback and answer questions can make a real difference.

Find out how the team supports junior staff and whether you’ll have a mentor or regular opportunities to discuss your development. You should feel challenged to learn new things, without being expected to know everything from day one.

3- Experience across RIBA stages

Understanding how a project progresses from concept to design through to construction can give you a much better understanding of the architectural process.

Depending on the practice and your responsibilities, you might initially focus on design work or planning applications. However, exposure to different RIBA stages can help you understand how projects develop and how decisions made early on affect the final outcome.

It’s worth asking what stages you’ll be involved in and how much responsibility you’ll have as you gain experience.

4- Part 2 study support

If you’re planning to continue towards Part 2, find out what support the practice offers. This might include contributions towards tuition fees, paid study leave or flexibility around university commitments.

Not every practice offers the same benefits, so it’s worth asking about this during the interview process. A supportive employer can make balancing work and further study much more manageable.

Your first role is about more than getting your foot in the door. It’s an opportunity to build your skills, gain practical experience and work out what you want from your career in architecture.

When comparing opportunities, think about the experience you’ll gain, the people you’ll learn from and the support available to help you progress. The right fit will look different for everyone, so take the time to work out what matters most to you.
